The Indian Art Market

The Indian art market has grown from USD $60 million in sales in 2005 to over USD $375 million in sales today.

Previously collectors of Indian art were corporates and businesses. During the past few years the collector base has broadened to include professionals and young collectors - a number of them outside of India.

Modern Indian artists like MF Husain, SH Raza, and FN Souza are now staples of international collectors as are the leading contemporaries such as Subodh Gupta and Barti Kher.

The seminal exhibition at the London Saatchi Gallery: The Empire Strikes Back: Indian Art Today which opened in January 2010 marked Indian contemporary arts coming of age. Artists like Atul Dodiya, LN Talur and Chitra Ganesh , as well as Gupta and Kher stood out.

Within India, the Indian Art Summit which began in Delhi in 2008 and is now renamed the Indian Art Fair is a major fixture on the international art circuit.
